Aquaria
Our aquaria comply with strict Home
Office requirements for the care and handling of animals.
The Lowestoft
aquarium facility contains:
- specialised facilities, such as a flume tank and controlled
temperature rooms
- flexible tank set-ups, including fish and shellfish culture and
holding facilities
- ambient and chilled seawater supply
- ambient freshwater supply
- flow-to-waste and recirculation systems
- air temperature and lighting control.
The total tank volume is
approximately 214.4m3. This is divided into
44 tanks with a combined volume of
147.3m3 for use with seawater; and 96 tanks with a
combined volume of 67.2m3 for use with a freshwater
supply.
A shallow seawater beach well
system supplies up to 44m3 per hour to the
laboratory. Freshwater is provided via a potable supply, which is
dechlorinated before use.
Our Weymouth laboratory houses a

- computer-controlled temperature 5-35°C (± 0.1ºC)
- flexible computer-controlled lighting to replicate any location
in the world (with fade)
