The East Coast Regional Environmental Characterisation (REC)
Programme was a multidisciplinary investigation that employed
"state of the art" techniques to develop a broad understanding of
the habitats and areas of archaeological interest over an extensive
area of approximately 3,300 km2 of the seabed off East Anglia. The
study was conducted over a three-year period.
High-quality geophysical, geological, archaeological and
biological data-sets were acquired during the project, and these
have been combined with existing data to produce interpreted mapped
outputs. These outputs provide the context for providing a regional
assessment of the physical, biological and archaeological
environment. Such assessments are presented individually and are
also integrated to provide a holistic view of the seabed and
important features of nature conservation or heritage importance.
As such, this information provides an essential underpinning for
decisions aimed at ensuring the sustainable management of offshore
resources and protecting the marine historic environment.
