Silly outfit competition

Posted by Koen on 03 February 2012

After leaving Swansea around lunchtime, the afternoon was packed with various activities around the ship.  Firstly, we talked the scientists who hadn't been onboard before through the procedures.  One of the first things we will get on with on Thursday is grab sampling.  So we discussed where and how the grab would be deployed, how we record our position, where and how we sieve the samples and where the samples are finally stored.  It may sound easy, but there are quite a few steps to go through, so it is good to familiarise everyone with the work before the samples start coming in fast one after the other.

Soon after the alarm bells went off.  It didn't come as a surprise, as within 24 hours from leaving port we undertake a muster.  All ship's crew gather at the muster point and a head count is done to make sure everyone is accounted for.  You'll be glad to know that one person was missing at the muster point: the Captain.  He stayed on the bridge sailing the ship towards our first survey site.  Once it was confirmed that everyone was present, we were given a demonstration on how to launch the liferaft.  We all learned about this at our sea survival training, but it is good to be reminded about this every now and then, but let's hope we won't need our skills refreshed!

And to finish off the drill there was the usual donning of survival suits.  Those who have been onboard before know to take a step backwards at that point, so we don't get chosen as a volunteer.  The unfortunate volunteers this time were Alex and Jenny, who had to wrangle their way into the neoprene survival suit.  To be honest, they did pretty well having the suit on in no time!  And when fully dressed, there was the usual photo opportunity to take some pictures of the people in their silly outfits. I haven't seen many people look good in these, but you can make up your own mind who wins this silly outfit competition!

With all preparations out of the way, come back tomorrow to find out more about the first samples.
