About the Collaborating Centre

The OIE Collaborating Centre for Information on Aquatic Animal
Diseases was established at Cefas' Weymouth Laboratory in
1997. Information on the occurrence of aquatic animal diseases in
other countries is needed by the veterinary services (or other
competent authority) of a country in order to make assessments of
the risk of introducing serious exotic diseases into its territory
through importation of living aquatic animals. The Collaborating
Centre has developed a database on the prevalence of all the
aquatic animal diseases included in the OIE Aquatic Animal
Health Code and OIE Diagnostic Manual for Aquatic
Animals, with the data arranged by country and host species,
to provide a simple and rapid means of retrieval of information on
their occurrence.
All OIE-published information on the geographical and host
ranges (natural and experimental) of the OIE-listed fish, mollusc
and crustacean diseases is included and referred to as OIE data. A
search of the published scientific literature for new information
on the geographical and host ranges of the OIE-listed aquatic
animal diseases is carried out continuously and all relevant data
entered as non-OIE data, together with details of the journal
reference and an abstract, to ensure that the epidemiological
picture is as complete and up-to-date as possible. The average
update frequency is approximately monthly.
