Environment and animal health
We study the impact of both disease and human activity on the
aquatic environment. Our world-class research is determining the
biological effects of contaminants in aquatic organisms,
particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
Our scientists lead the biological effects component of the
Clean
Seas Environmental Monitoring Programme (CSEMP), and
represent the UK marine community at both national and
international levels through cross-government agencies and
ICES working groups.
We provide advice on the threats posed by emerging contaminants,
including nanoparticles. In
addition, we are developing and validating new biological effects
techniques (eg, genomics) alongside our routine ecotoxicological
bioassays.
Our scientists also lead research into the development of
markers of fish welfare in aquaculture. Developing the ethical use
of fish in experimentation is another important aspect of
our work.
