Microbiology and human health
We have an active R&D programme in the
field of shellfish hygiene microbiology to help to safeguard human
health.
Our scientists are using microbial source tracking, molecular
pathogen characterisation and the interpretation of polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) data and to help identify the causative agents
associated with gastroenteritis and other human illnesses.
We are also developing methods for characterising
bivalve-associated pathogens such as noroviruses, hepatitis A and
Vibrio spp. so that appropriate management and control
decisions can be made, to safeguard human health and protect viable
businesses.
Cefas is designated by the European Commission as the European Union Reference
Laboratory (EURL), and by the Food
Standards Agency as the UK's National Reference Laboratory
(NRL), for monitoring bacteriological and viral contamination
of bivalve molluscs. In addition, we provide the European Union
Reference Laboratory for
crustacean diseases.
