scottish-shellfishWe undertake a programme of sanitary surveys in Scotland on behalf of the  Food Standards Agency Scotland (FSAS).

We specifically focus on new applications for full classification of bivalve molluscs (not "fast track") and some other species, such as echinoderms (but not gastropods). Adjacent existing classified sites are included in the surveys, where practical.

In addition, a number of surveys of existing classified areas are undertaken each year, prioritised on the basis of a risk matrix.

Full sanitary surveys are performed for new and existing aquaculture sites. Restricted sanitary surveys are undertaken for new "wild harvest" sites.

Our Scottish sanitary survey team deliver the survey programme, with significant support from FSAS-funded local authority sampling officers. The latter provide local information and assist with shoreline surveys.

Applications for classification sent to FSAS are forwarded to Cefas so that sites can be considered for sanitary surveys. For an application form contact:
