Freshwater fisheries

Trout angler

Freshwater fisheries for game (principally salmonid) and coarse fish species make major economic, social and recreational contributions in England and Wales, and freshwater fish are important indicators of the health of our rivers and still waters.  These freshwater ecosystems are under growing pressure from human activities, which may not only affect the physical habitats but also the quantity and quality of the water within them.
