Salmonid stocks
Nature and extent of the salmon resource
There are 78 rivers in England and Wales that support salmon
(Figure 1), although some of these river stocks are very small and
support minimal catches. These rivers vary significantly in their
nature, ranging from spatey upland catchments to stable,
groundwater-fed chalk rivers. There are a number of salmon
rivers that have recovered (e.g. River Tyne) or are recovering
(e.g. River Tees) from the effects of pollution and major industry
during the early part of the 20th century such that they
now again support salmon fisheries. Some other river systems,
including some of significant size, are also now in the very
earliest stages of recovery from historic degradation. Where salmon
are being recorded breeding in these (e.g. River Mersey and
Yorkshire Ouse system) there is potential for new and significant
populations to develop.
