Nanotechnology

The Nanotechnology Research Co-ordination Group, set up by Defra, co-ordinates publicly funded research into the potential risks presented by the products and applications of nanotechnologies. As part of the group's task force, Cefas advises on nanotechnology impacts in marine settings.

Our representative on the Nanotechnologies' Environmental Hazard and Risk Assessment (NEHRA) task force is Dr Stephen Feist, an expert with over 30 years' experience in the field of fish and invertebrate histology and cellular ultrastructure, and President of the European Association of Fish Pathologists.

NEHRA has overseen the successful launch of the Environmental Nanoscience Initiative, designed for capacity-building and knowledge transfer in this scientific discipline. It is also assessing whether current ecotoxicological methods for nanomaterials hazard assessment are fit for purpose.

To find out more about our work in this area, or to seek environmental advice, please contact Stephen Feist.
