Water quality

Measuring water quality is essential to any programme monitoring marine processes and the health of the aquatic environment. Cefas takes an ecosystem approach, where the interaction of all elements are studied together, in order to understand how aquatic systems operate.

We have more than 50 years' experience in environmental-quality monitoring and assessment, and we use our expertise to provide advice on improving water quality.

Our in situ monitoring equipment provides cost-effective and up-to-date data. This helps us to detect and identify environmental changes over long time periods.

We also have an established international reputation for expertise in designing and operating autonomous monitoring equipment and supporting software systems. Our SmartBuoys provide long-term observations of physical, chemical and biological changes from the sea's surface to its seabed.

Our services include:

  • management and policy advice for improving water quality
  • advice on the design of monitoring programmes to assess water quality
  • deployment of autonomous instrumentation
  • data collection, analysis and interpretation
  • real-time observation and telemetry of water-quality data
  • geographical information systems (GIS) for data handling
  • computer modelling.
