Seabed characterisation

Cefas has the technology and expertise to undertake seabed surveys using both traditional techniques and acoustic technology.

We can characterise the seabed in terms of sediment, texture and morphology (shape and structure), using acoustic tools such as side-scan sonar and multi-beam echo sounders. These tools can help to identify areas affected by human activities such as fishing, dredged-material disposal and aggregate extraction, or those of nature conservation interest.

Side-scan sonar is most suited to assess changes in seabed nature - for example, to study the extent of dredged material disposal sites or sand plumes near aggregate extraction sites.

We provide a wide range of services to our customers, including:

  • assessing benthic ecology
  • marine mapping
  • initial baseline surveys
  • beam trawls
  • data analysis and interpretation.

To carry out these services we use a range of highly sophisticated equipment, including:

  • our own research vessel, the Cefas Endeavour, which has excellent acoustic systems
  • side-scan and multi-beam sonar
  • video camera, sledge and sediment-profile camera
  • geographical information systems.
